Indian Spice Route

İndian spice route is a historic caravan trail, which stretches from the banks of Yamuna River in the east to the Indus River in the west. It is believed that during the early era, there were about twenty-seven long-haul spices routes that have been used by the Indian traders. Most of the spices that were traded were transported in wagons and caravans as they were the cheapest means of transport then. In addition to the caravan trade, the non- caravan traders used to carry spices and locally produced herbal products as they traveled through the Indian lands. Most of the spices that are carried by the Indian spice route are used in eastern India and the ancient Middle East.

In this article, we will focus on the five most important spices being traded in the Indian spice route – turmeric, ginger, mace, cinnamon, and pepper. Turmeric is considered to be the king of spices by many Indian religious leaders and is mainly found in south Indian cuisine. Turmeric is believed to have medicinal properties and has been used since ancient times for treating skin disorders and infections as well as many other health-related problems. This explains why the spices from south India are mostly used in the treatment of skin disorders and not just any spice, but the king of spices, turmeric, is used here.
